COMMUNITY SAFETY INITIATIVE (CSI DULUTH)

The Citywide Crime Prevention meetings that began in September 2006 with representatives from Community Clubs and Planning Districts across the City, continue to draw residents from across Duluth and the surrounding areas. NHS became the leader in this effort in October 2006, then partnering with LISC and CHUM. Holy Family Church has hosted the meetings, and was chosen to receive the 2008 NHS Cornerstone award for their support.  40 neighborhoods have now been represented, with over 1700 people signed in, representing over 700 individual residents that have attended one or more meetings.

Twenty-seven Crime Prevention meetings have been held since the CSI inception. Topics have included Meth Awareness, Internet Predators, Meth and Our Children, Our Judicial System, Gangs & Drugs, Our Judicial System: Follow-up, A Community Resources Panel, and Partnering for Safer Neighborhoods with Julia Ryan - National LISC Program Director. Eight to twelve Officers have attended each meeting. This year we have focused on the Nuisance Ordinance, the Perception of Crime, Prescription Drug Abuse, Drug & Gang Awareness, and we celebrated Citizen Patrols and Block Clubs. The CSI also hosted it’s first Council Candidate Forum focusing on Crime and Quality of Life issues, this was co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters. We have co-hosted or supported 28 National Night Out and Block parties and 3 Community Marches/Vigils.

The Community Safety Initiative was recognized by Duluth LISC at their Annual Meeting in November 2008.
